We Just Had a Baby....Now What?  Learning Begins on Day One.

Birth to 3 Years

►Can distinguish individual books by looking at their covers

 

►Looks at pictures in books and understands they represent

   things in the real world

 

►May attend to some print elements, such as letters in names

3 to 4 Years

►Recognizes print in the environment

 

►Holds books correctly and pretends to read them

 

►Knows that books tell stories

 

►Understands that different kinds of print serve different purposes

   for example,stories versus street signs

Kindergarten

►Knows the parts of a book and function

 

►Begins to track print when listening to a familiar text being read

   or when rereading own writing

 

►Knows the difference between a letter and a word

 

►Learns basic conventions of directionality: word boundaries and

   left to right sweeps

 

►Uses word boundaries to distinguish words within sentence

 

►Recognize single letters and can locate the first letter in a word

Early Grade 1

►Matches oral words to printed words with one-to-one

   correspondence

 

►Knows additional conventions of print, including titles and

   authors

 

►Full print awareness
