District Planning

Groton Area School District Facilities Analysis and Information

On April 11, Groton Area Public School District residents will decide whether to replace the oldest part of the middle school/high school with a new building that meets current health, safety and education standards. Approval of the ballot question will also allow improvements to heating and ventilation, wiring, the fire alarm system and technology access throughout the middle school/high school.

The 83-year-old core section of the middle school/high school building has exceeded its useful life. Classrooms are too small, air quality and temperature control is poor and teachers and students do not have the technology access they should have.

When developing its long-term plan, Groton Area School District leaders reached out to residents and listened to the public to prioritize needs. District leaders worked with experts to develop solutions and funding options, then took more input from the community before approving the proposal to put before voters.

If voters approve the April 11 ballot question, residents will provide Groton Area middle and high school students with a safe and healthy building and technology-ready learning spaces they need to succeed.

The cost for this project will be $13.9 million, which would be financed through a 20-year bond. This works out to an additional 50¢ per year per $1,000 in property value for the initial three years with subsequent increases equivalent to expiring debt.  This allows us to avoid an initial spike in taxation at the onset and provides a more stable tax scheme.  This means the owner of a home valued at $100,000 would see taxes increase by $4.17 a month if voters approve the plan. You can find out more about the tax impact on the school district website.

The ballot proposal for Groton Area Middle School/High School is separate from the Groton Area Elementary School project. For more information about that project, please see links to materials detailing the Groton Area Elementary School project farther down on this page.
